The beach of Agadir, Morocco, is experiencing erosion problems and begins to lose its fine sand. Some places would have become stony. The importance of the waterfront for tourism pushes the municipality to question the measures to be taken. The installation of breakwaters is under study but seems too expensive, nearly 20 million dirhams (2 million euros) for a small installation. A financial contribution from the hoteliers was considered but for the moment, nothing is decided. Not to mention the aesthetic aspect of these systems, which also hinders decisions.

The current breakwaters, located south of the bay, are in poor condition. The mayor of the city would opt for breakwaters that brush the surface of the water. Meanwhile, a study by a private firm recommends reloading the sand beach, especially south of the coast.

The Agence National des Ports d'Agadir has denied information relayed by some electronic sites mentioning the looting of the sand of Imesouane beach, located north of Agadir, indicating that this is dredging works of the accumulated sand in the port of Imesouane. The work of dredging ports are among the missions assigned to the ANP in accordance with the law No. 15-02 on ports, said the agency in a statement, noting that these works are carried out periodically to preserve the depth level of the ponds and docks of each port, in order to guarantee the safety of the navigation and to improve the operating conditions of the boats.

The regional management of the ANP in Agadir has put in place an action plan to improve the operating conditions of the port of Imesouane and guarantee the safety of navigation and professionals, says the same source, stating that this program involves the dredging of accumulated sands which impede the smooth running of the fishing activity and constitute a danger to the safety of the fishermen. And to add that the sand extracted by dredging is then dumped at sea to prevent any theft or looting in an area located a few kilometers north of this beach.
